Mob Wives: Wives With No Exit

Maria Concetta Cacciola

I was reading a very interesting, yet horrifying story, of certain mob wives in Italy who, want out of the lifestyle. For many who live there, there is no out and the circumstances they live under have forced some to take very drastic measures.

Maria Concetta Cacciola, 31 and mother of three, is one of those women who could not escape the mental and physical abuse of her husband. Held as a prisoner in their Calabria home in Southern Italy, Maria’s saw her future as unbearable. Some of Maria’s relatives were high ranking leaders of Calabria’s organized crime family. Maria made the unthinkable decision to contact authorities and offer them information, breaking the sacred Omerta code of silence, in exchange for protection. However, after giving authorities the evidence of hidden arms and leaving her home, Maria found she could not live without her three children. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with her family and against the advice of law enforcement, Maria retracted her testimony. She endured what was described as ten days of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her family, and then Maria swallowed a bottle of muriatic acid and died an agonizing death. Finally Maria had escaped the mob.

The complete details of this story and that of two other women, Denise Garofalo and Tita Buccafusca, who suffered similar fates, can be found at Maria and others with No Exit This article is well worth reading and I highly recommend it.

Omg this is so very sad. I can't help but feel so sad for her and her children who will now have to grow up without their mother.

I wonder if stuff like that happens here in The U.S. I'll have to research it.
