Mob Wives: Growing Up Gravano

Karen’s interview tried to cover a lot of things in less than 20 minutes. I’m glad I write for the blog and knew more details to fill in the blanks. I wish they had given her more time, but I will recap some of what they covered. 

Karen’s father, Sammy “The Bull” Gravano committed or was involved in 19 murders. Karen is asked what kind of father was he? Karen says, “He was a great father.” He was always at their bedside when they were sick and he was at dinner every night. She thought he was in the construction business. And he really was in construction. Sammy controlled all the unions that built New York City.

When Karen first heard the word gangster, she took it as a positive thing. The reason is that she and a classmate passed by a very large house, almost a mansion, and the friend said to her, “you see that big house, a gangster lives there.” So Karen associated the word with being a good thing. 

They discuss the 1982 murder of Frank Fiala. Karen was ten years old at the time and asked her father if she could have a sleepover with a friend that night. Sammy told her it wasn’t a good time, as he tucked a gun in his pants. Later that night Frank Fiala was found dead. Karen was just a kid and says she didn’t know how t react to what her father was doing. 

Her father was her protector, her provider, her friend. At Karen’s Sweet 16 Party her father introduced her to John Gotti as “Uncle John.” Gotti handed her an envelope with ten $100 bills. When Karen graduated high school, her father bought her a flower shop and it became a booming business.

On December 16th, 1985, Paul Castellano was killed. She knew her father was involved. People were glorifying it at the time. 

In 1991 Sammy Gravano was in a New York prison. He was the underboss of the Gambino crime family. He told Karen he was going to cooperate with the authorities. She was always taught “you never tell” and now he was going against everything he taught her to believe in. Karen says that when her father turned informant she felt her dad was betraying her, how could he do this? She couldn’t deal with the betrayal. He was a “rat” and that was worse than his killing 19 people. None of her friends were allowed to talk to her. She was so upset Sammy almost reneged on the deal with the government. 

Sammy was also involved in the murder of her uncle, her mother’s brother. His defense was that when you join the mob you take an oath to kill if you have to. Karen says they don’t talk about it. When Sammy is done serving his time the family moves to Arizona. 

In Arizona, Sammy starts a new construction business and Karen says she felt more comfortable “being bad.” Sammy revert to crime by financing a drug ring and having his own “family” He is currently serving time for that. Karen’s brother, Gerard, got 9 years and Karen and her mother each got house arrest for their involvement.

Today, Karen is a single mom with an 11 year old daughter, Karina. She divides her time between New York and Arizona. Sammy is due to be released from prison in 2019. While in prison he creates art. They show some of his work, he is very talented. Karen never knew how artistic he was. Sammy doesn’t like the show Mob Wives and always calls Karen the day after it airs and says, “ Watch your mouth” or “Why  are you cursing on TV?”

They ask Karen if her father is still capable of murder? She says yes, if someone tried to hurt her he would kill them in a minute, but he doesn’t want to kill people.

Mob Wives: Adding Victoria Gotti, Jr. To Cast

Could Victoria Gotti Ever be in Mob Wives?

Very early on in our blog, one of our readers questioned why Victoria Gotti, Jr. was not included in the cast. And recently, there has even been some discussion that a new mob wife might possibly be added to the cast. So, it seemed like a good question to me and I thought I would address it. Victoria Jr. was, up until the Mob Wives show premiered, the most well known mafia princess of our time. She is the daughter of John Gotti himself, the notorious boss of the Gambino crime family, dubbed the “Teflon Don” for escaping convictions and the “Dapper Don” for the expensive clothes he wore. Victoria Jr. even had her own reality show for a period of time, “Growing Up Gotti.” So why wasn’t she selected for the show?

Well, after watching the show and reading a lot of background information on all the families, it would appear to be impossible for Victoria Gotti Jr. to have even remotely been considered for the show. If you have been reading our blog and other articles, you may have come to this conclusion yourself.

If you recall, in the early episodes, Renee was not happy with Karen’s return to Staten Island because her father was a “rat” and Renee’s father taught her that breaking the code of Omerta and snitching, was the biggest violation of the rules of the mob. Renee was told to cut off all contact with Karen because Sammy “The Bull” became an informant for the FBI against John Gotti. This is true even though Gravano was a member of the Gambino crime family and Anthony Graziano was allegedly a member of the Bonanno crime family according to federal authorities. Being a “rat” transcends family affiliations.

Karen has revealed in interviews that John Gotti was often a guest in her home and, in fact, he was present at her Sweet 16 Party, making the event all the more memorable. So the Gravano family and the Gotti family were not only connected by the same mob family, they also seemed to associate on a personal level as well.

Sammy, who was the “Underboss” of John Gotti, was eventually was convinced by the FBI, to testify against Gotti, when they allowed him to listen to tapes of Gotti allegedly talking to authorities and implicating Sammy in various crimes. Sammy’s testimony at Gotti’s trial, lead to Gotti’s conviction and life sentence, and Gotti eventually died in prison.  Although Gravano is the one always referred to as a "rat," in his interview with Diane Sawyer, Gravano did make it clear that John Gotti was in fact "snitching" to authorities about him in order to protect himself.  This is what ultimately provoked Sammy to testify against him.

Given the history between Karen’s father, Sammy Gravano, and Victoria Jr.s’ father, John Gotti, it is highly improbable that the two women could ever work together on any project. Even if their families celebrated or socialized at one time, the day Sammy turned on Gotti had to be something the Gotti family could never forgive or forget.

What if Victoria joined Mob Wives? What would that episode look like?

Renee: Hi, Victoria what brings you to Staten Island from Howard Beach?

Victoria: I’m looking for a nice place to live. My neighbors are sick of my kids growing up Gotti there.

Renee: Well I’m surprised you picked this area because you know Karen lives here now.

Victoria: Karen Gravano? Are you f--king kidding me?

Renee: No, why would I kid you about that?

Victoria: Her f--king father ratted on my father!


Carla’s House: Carla on phone with Drita

Carla: Hi Drita, guess what? Renee texted me a minute ago, Victoria Gotti is at her house.

Drita: Yeah? What’s up with that?

Carla: I don’t know, but I’m thinkin’ I should call Karen and tell her to meet me there, and then I won’t show up.

Drita: But Karen ain’t gonna be happy to see Vic there.

Carla: Exactly, there will be a f--king war. That’s payback for Renee invitin’ Karen to her house for dinner and not tellin’ you about it. And pay back for Karen for disrespectin’ you and Lee with her book.  I'll bet she puts Lee D'Avanzo's picture in it!

Drita: Yeah, they did do that. She better NOT put Lee's f--king picture in her book!  Tell me what Karen says because I NEED TO KNOW, and I ain’t talkin’ to that b*tch after all her talk about a f--king timeline, that ain’t my timeline!

Carla: Ok talk to you soon.


Karen’s Apartment (phone rings)

Karen: Hi, Carla, what’s up?

Carla: Renee invited us over for coffee, I told her I was about to call you, so I would let you know. Can you make it?

Karen: What were you calling about?

Carla: Oh, ummm, Drita was telling me she is sorry she overreacted at the restaurant, she was upset about other things, and I wanted to see how you were feelin’ about it. (Damn I a good liar!)

Karen: I don’t know Carla, is Drita going to Renee’s too?

Carla: No, I just got off the phone with her, she has a thing with Aleeya.

Karen: Ok I’ll meet you there in 30 minutes.

Carla: See you there. (Dials Drita’s number)


Drita’s House (phone rings)

Carla: Just got off the phone with Karen, it’s on and poppin’ in 30 minutes.

Drita: I wish I had a f--kin’ front row seat.


Renee’s House (doorbell rings)

Renee: I have no idea who that could be, one minute Victoria.

Renee opens door…Karen walks in.

Renee (surprised): Hi Karen, I kindda have company right now.

Karen: Yeah I know, Carla right?

Renee: No, not Carla, Victoria Gotti. (Victoria enters room, sees Karen)

Victoria: You B*TCH! Your father snitched on my father!

Karen: You don’t know what the hell you are talkin’ about! YOUR father snitched on my father b*tch!

Victoria: He did not, my father would never RAT on anyone. You’re a crazy b*tch!

Karen: Oh really? Well he ratted on my dad to the Feds, and he threw him under the f--kin’ bus to save his ass.

(Renee confessional: “I’m so glad I got a front seat for this, I hope they don’t break anything.”)

Victoria: My father was the one thrown under the bus by YOUR father the RAT! Just look up your father’s name on Google and all you see is “RAT” “SNITCH” “INFORMANT” B*tch! The whole world knows what your father did!

Karen: You don’t know what the f--k you are talking about. Your timeline is off b*tch. Your father talked to the Feds FIRST and they had him on tape. Then the Feds played the tapes of your father snitching on my father for my dad. That’s when my dad decided he had to save himself from your backstabbing, double crossing, snitching, rat of a father. GET YOUR TIMELINE STRAIGHT!

Victoria lunges for Karen and grabs her hair. Karen screams and grabs Victoria’s hair. Renee removes her precious vase from the coffee table so it doesn’t get broken, then runs for cover in her spandex. Renee tweets “Huge fight in my Living Room, minime-mobettes, Karen and Victoria Gotti, hair everywhere!”

Carla reads the tweet says “No, she di-ent!” and calls Drita.


Drita’s House (phone rings)

Carla: Just saw Renee’s tweet, it’s goin’ down at Renee’s!

Drita: (laughs) Payback for Karen and I didn’t even have to take my shoes off!

Renee tweets again: “AJ walked in, saw the fight, filled a bucket with ice cold water and threw it at Karen and Victoria; FIGHT OVER!”

Mob Wives: Debra Gravano, Karen’s Mother

Typically, mob wives didn’t play a very active role in the mob business. Their role was to keep the house nice and take care of the kids. They cooked and cleaned. They weren’t involved in the crimes, they weren’t told anything about mob business, they didn’t ask where the money came from. But, all that seems to be changing in recent years. Just on “Mob Wives” alone, we have a few women, actually daughters of mobsters, who have participated and gotten into their own share of trouble with various criminal activities. Jenn, the executive producer, was involved in Hector Pagan’s marijuana distribution ring, Lana, her older sister, was involved in her husband’s tax fraud, and Karen played a part in her father’s Ecstasy ring in Arizona.

However, there is one wife who eventually got tangled up in her husband’s business, Debra Gravano. The Ecstasy ring in Arizona seems to have been a family affair, with all four of the Gravanos involved to one degree or another. I got curious as to what was Debra’s role in all this. This is a woman who married one of the most infamous gangsters in recent mob history, Sammy Gravano. A woman, who after learning her husband played a role in the murder and dismemberment of her own brother, Nicholas Scibetta, still went and joined her husband in Arizona and became part of his drug distribution ring. I am almost at a loss for words to go on, but go on I shall.

The first time law enforcement heard about the Arizona drug ring operated by Gravano, was in 1999. They soon learned that Debra, his wife, was working with her son Gerard at “Marathon” Construction Company (the same name Sammy used for his company in NY). The police wire taps captured many conversations. One conversation was between Gerard and Sammy. Gerard tells Sammy that his mother wants to know if it’s okay to lend Papa $70 for gas receipts. Sammy says yes, tell her to bring it to work tomorrow. Translation: Debra Gravano was to take $70,000 from the home safe and loan it to Papa to buy drugs. The next morning Debra arrives with the money at the construction company. Then there were three follow up calls between Debra and Sammy.

Sammy calls Debra and, in an angry accusatory tone, tells her the money was short by $5,000. She insists it was all there, she counted the $70,000 herself.  Sammy calls a second time, still aggravated about the shortage because this was the second time a delivery was short, and he thinks Debra is the one who is taking the money. In the third call, Sammy admits to Debra that the money was all there, he had just miscounted it.

The police eventually got enough evidence to arrest the whole Gravano family, and many others involved in the ring. They were indicted in early 2000. Debra plead guilty to “one count of illegally conducting an enterprise” and received 5 years probation. She was allegedly active in the smuggling of the ecstasy and the money she was holding was used to buy more ecstasy. This operation took one million dollars out of Arizona’s economy to purchase illegal drugs and then there were the expenses of the consequences in loss of health, danger to public safety, welfare expenses and harming those who used the drugs, all additional expenses the state had to bear.

On November 18, 2003, the Attorney General for the State of Arizona, ordered Debra and Sammy Gravano to pay the sum of $805,713.41 to the State of Arizona, as reimbursement for monies spent to investigate and prosecute the activities of their drug ring.

I have to wonder how much, if anything, they paid back on that judgment.

Mob Wives: David Seabrook: Karen’s Ex-Boyfriend

On Episode 5 of VH1's Mob Wives, David Seabrook made a call to Karen Gravano in which they discussed a few things, mainly their daughter.  David has been described as Karen’s husband, fiance and live in boyfriend. I am not going to try to determine his “status” in her life. She referred to him as her ex-boyfriend, so we will stick with that. I am just going to report on a few details I picked up on the other man who played a significant role in Karen’s life.

In 1995, Debra Gravano moved to Arizona to be with Sammy. She had company. Karen, her boyfriend David Seabrook, and their baby also joined Sammy in Arizona. David Seabrook had reportedly been convicted, at the age of 14, of attempted murder, but that’s nothing compared to Sammy’s history.

It turns out that David was also involved in the Devil Dog Ecstasy ring in Arizona. The police allegedly obtained 17,000 hours of wiretapped conversations over a two month period. One particular situation involved one of the “money drops” for the drugs which was $10,000 short. The wiretap caught that conversation and subsequent discussions, between David and Karen, speculating about what happened to the missing money. Since Sammy, himself, had counted the money for the drop, Seabrook felt that he took it. Karen told him to go speak to her father about it. Police were able to capture the meeting between David and Sammy, at Sammy’s construction office, on film because the window was wide open. Sammy was angry and his arms were waving violently. This allowed police to tap his office phone, since they now had probable cause that drug business was being conducted there. In another call, Seabrook was allegedly reported to tell a New York associate that he was getting rich selling drugs for Gravano.

“From the wiretap summary: ‘Dave stated that he has never made this much money in his life. ... Dave goes on to say that they are giving him (Gravano) 50 cents (per pill) on everything given to them. ... Dave mentions that this is the first time he's been on this level.’”

Dave also was recorded as saying how Sammy was a great advisor and told them how to reinvest their money into the drug operation in order to make even more money.

In the end, when police took down 46 people who were involved with the drug ring, David Seabrook was one of those arrested. While most participants got probation or short prison sentences, David did not. He was given the same sentence as Sammy's son, Gerard, 9 ¼ years.

Mob Wives: Recap Ep 105 Unfinished Business

"Lee's a scum bag!"

The episode starts out with the four women meeting at a very nice Supper Club. Renee says she was raised having the best of everything and she deserves the best. Carla is ready to drink and party, what else is new? Renee tells the waiter she wants all his attention, which makes Drita’s “stomach turn.” Renee wastes no time ordering her Patron with lemon, while Drita announces she has a birthday coming up. Drita and Carla tell Renee she should go to the gym to look better, but Renee prefers the faster, easier remedy of plastic surgery. Renee loves being the center of attention which Karen finds annoying. Then, out of the blue, Renee announces, in her loud, outdoor voice, that she is Anthony Graziano’s daughter! People appear to be shocked to hear this. I say appear to be, because if they live on Staten island, and if they have heard anything about the Mob Wives, they surely know who she is…plus there is always the dead giveaway of the camera crew. Renee “dances” with a stranger for even more attention. You would have to see the dance to believe it. Check out VH1’s show clips. They have put up 7 of the best clips of episode 5. Overall I would say, they were loud, obnoxious and unladylike.

Drita and Karen go to lunch and start to reminisce about the good old days. They had the best times and, Drita says, Karen is “real and fun.” Karen mentions her book, and says she has mixed emotions about reliving her past. Writing this book is bringing a lot of feelings to the surface and it’s kind of like therapy. Karen mentions that she still has issues with Drita marrying Lee and never telling her, all the while Drita keeps trying to downplay Karen’s and Lee’s relationship by making it sound less than it was.

Renee visits the plastic surgeon with her friend Nikole. She is going in for skin rejuvenation, better known as a chemical peel done with lasers. The doctor explains it’s a two step procedure, there may be some bleeding. Renee complains that her face feels like it’s on fire.

Back at Renee’s house Carla drops by to see Renee’s face. She expects it to be glowing, instead her face is all scabbed up, red and bloody with swelling under the eyes. Renee says AJ won’t look at her, and Carla says she doesn’t want to look at her either. Carla thinks Renee gets too much surgery and worries she won’t stop. My personal view is that people should age gracefully. Many of the results I have seen do not improve the person’s looks, in fact they look worse. As for the “chemical peel” Renee had, I did not notice a difference.

Karen is in her apartment and gets a call from David, her ex boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Karina. He tells her Karina is getting good grades and she misses Karen. Karen misses her daughter very much. Karen explains that David was in prison most of Karina’s life, but she wants them to have a close relationship. Then she drops a bomb on David and tells him she wants to start dating again. David is obviously disappointed to hear this. He says he is “trippin’” She says she feels stuck, and he tells her to date, but you can tell he isn’t happy about it. Karen seems to have decided she doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life with David and needs to move on. (Watch for a blog on David later this week).

Drita drops by Carla’s house and wants to lay on the couch. Carla says her boyfriend is working, he is good with the kids, and they have been dating over a year…even though she is still married. This is just another reason why I do not care for Carla. No moral compass. I believe you should end one relationship before starting another, especially when there are children involved. I have to wonder if she decided her marriage was over and then started dating OR she met this man and then decided her marriage was over. She claims Joe knows about him and is okay with her dating. She is living her life. So Drita wonders if Lee would be okay with her moving on and dating. Carla says no. Drita thinks about leaving Lee, but she seems very conflicted about whether she should stay with him or move on. 

At Karen’s apartment, her cousin Rena comes by to help her with her book. They discuss making a timeline of her life. Karen says Sammy became the underboss in 1986, the same year the Gambino boss, Paul Castellano, was killed. Then her father was arrested in 1990 and at the John Gotti trial in 1992 is when she really found out who her father was and what he did. He went from being number two in command and very powerful to a “rat.” She says she started acting out and dating bad boys, and that is how she ended up dating and spending seven years of her life with Lee. But, she found out from different people, that Lee was badmouthing her on the streets. Karen mentions again that she has issues with Drita because when she started dating Lee she never called to tell Karen, and Karen needs to address these feelings she has about Drita.

Drita is at home getting ready for her big birthday party. Her cousin Amanda is applying make-up, way too much make-up if you ask me. All four women head out to the party in a limo, drinking champagne all the way there. Drita thinks Renee’s face looks awesome. Thank God it healed before the party. Of course, Drita wishes Lee could be there. They are seated in the “Chelsea Room” where they continue to get drunk. Party Renee is on the scene! Carla’s boyfriend sits next to Renee, but Renee finds him rude and obnoxious. He tells Renee if he wasn’t with Carla, he would be with Renee. Renee thinks that he is being totally disrespectful and she gets angry. Renee tells Carla that she could do better and deserves better, but Carla doesn’t want to hear it. Drita keeps drinking because she doesn’t want to think of Lee. Drita ends up on the floor. 

The next morning, a very hung over Drita calls Carla from her bed. She doesn’t even remember getting home the night before. That’ll happen when you drink straight vodka all night. Carla tells her she took her home. Drita says she needs a nap and peace of mind. She hasn’t been talking to Lee either.

Karen and Carla meet at the gym to workout. Carla is helping Karen to get in shape. Karen starts talking about trying online dating. She wants a “professional” man with “a good loaf of bread.” I never heard this expression before, maybe it’s only popular in mob circles. But, in case you are like me, a “good loaf of bread” refers to a man’s penis. Karen makes Carla laugh. Karen says her friends in Arizona want to know why she was going to see Drita after she betrayed her by dating Lee. The fact that Drita never called her, and she had to hear if from someone else, really bothers Karen. Carla seems to downplay Karen and Lee’s relationship by saying when you’re young everyone dates everyone, as though it was a teenage relationship. But Karen says this was an adult relationship for seven years and is pissed because she feels Drita has been feeding Carla a watered down version in order to make herself feel better for what she did. 

Drita gets a call from Lee, they have not talked since the big fight. Their relationship is a roller coaster. Drita feels bad about the fight, she misses Lee and wants to make up. She asks if he knows “who was pinched in the mob bust.” He says he knows lots of people who were arrested. She is still annoyed that she has no clue when he is coming home. Lee wishes her a Happy Birthday.

Karen arrives at Renee’s house to discuss Drita. She wants Renee’s opinion. Karen feels Drita is downplaying her past relationship with Lee. The fact is that Drita started dating Lee the same year Karen broke up with him. Karen feels she spent seven years of her adult life with Lee and it was a significant relationship. Renee sizes up the situation based on what Karen said. Drita owes her an apology and should acknowledge she did something wrong by dating Lee. It was wrong, she broke a code between girlfriends, she broke loyalty and trust. She didn’t respect the friendship and this has to be addressed. I can’t wait till they address it already, because we ALL get it except for Drita!!! 

Drita gets another call from Lee. She tells him about Karen’s book and that it will be about her life. Lee sounds agitated and wants to know what is the big deal about her life that she needs to write a book about it. He wants Drita to tell her he doesn’t want to be in her book. He says that a few times. He is angry and then calls Karen a few nasty names and throws in the word “fat” a couple of times for good measure. 

Ok now we finally get to the big scene where Karen goes to confront Drita. It was disappointing in that it’s not much longer than the sneak peek we got of the episode this week. Karen gets around to her agenda fast. She tells Drita she thinks she has been minimizing her past relationship with Lee. She says Drita started dating Lee soon after Karen broke up with him and that “wasn’t cool.” Drita makes excuses, but Karen feels betrayed and wants Drita to admit she did something wrong. Drita says, “It’s not gonna happen!” Karen wants to know how they can move past this? Drita changes the subject and says Lee doesn’t want to be in her book. Karen calls Lee is a “scum bag” and she will write whatever she wants about him. I see there is no love lost there. Drita gets mad, Lee is the father of her kids and Karen is disrespecting him in her house. Karen feels Lee didn’t respect her, so she can bash Lee if she wants. Drita tells her if you bash my kids’ father we are going to have a problem. So now the episode ends with their relationship up in the air, nothing was resolved and the business is still unfinished. 

I found this episode did not live up to the hype for me. The confrontation between Karen and Drita was brought up in almost every conversation throughout the night, but when we finally get to it at the very end, they only devote two and a half minutes to it and it’s left like an open, bleeding, unattended wound. The sneak peek covered the best part of those two minutes too. I felt it was a let down. As for Carla, she isn’t going to get any mother of the year awards from me. She is married and dating. How do you explain that to your children? I know there are plenty of ways to get quick divorces if you need to end your marriage in a hurry. But dating and marriage were not meant to go together. Maybe we, as a society, have gotten to lax with our values? Renee needs to tone it down. She acts like she is the mob wife to beat all mob wives. She really would do herself a favor if she wasn’t so “obnoxious.” I think many times her behavior embarrasses her son, AJ too. Then, there’s Drita. What a fine example she sets for her two young daughters. Between her cursing profanities left and right and threatening to “beat” up everyone who says anything she doesn’t like, she is one outstanding role model. She needs to figure out what she wants now, before she wastes another two to four years making packages and waiting for Lee. Karen may be the mob wife I like best, which surprises me. I think it’s because she is more open about her past, she is “calmer and more rational” in her conversational style, and she pulled on my heartstrings when she said she missed her daughter. Karen, whatever else you might have to say about her, seems to have a very close and loving relationship with her daughter. I think her reason for being part of the show is to create a better life for her and her daughter. If I have to pick one for Mother of the Year tonight, I pick Karen.
