Mob Wives: “Junkie-Gate,” Carla’s Scandal

Carla's 46th Birthday & Masquerade Party
Makes me think of the song, "You Can't Hide Your Lying Eyes"

The word “junkie” is very offensive and meant to be. There has been a lot of discussion of Carla’s use of the word since the show aired. I have watched Mob Wives from day one and have probably seen each episode at least twice. There are scenes I have watched over and over to get facts straight for the blog I am writing. I love good quotes, so I pay attention to words and how they are used. Which brings me to episode one of season three, “Mob Knives.” I was so busy taking notes I could not count the number of times Carla was filmed calling Renee a “junkie.” Considering the show is about 40 minutes long, minus commercials, it felt like she was saying in every 3 minutes. Well guess what? I wasn’t too far off from my estimate.

Many fans and viewers of the show, not to mention Renee’s family and friends, were appalled and disgusted at the use of the word “junkie.” It became more and more offensive every time Carla screamed it out. Her insensitivity and total lack of compassion for Renee, who was suffering from a disease, is disgraceful. Drita said she felt uncomfortable and even surprised that Carla would insult Renee that way after all she had been through. Drita even said she wouldn’t add her “two cents” (hmmmm, I wonder where she got that expression?). Big Ang said, she didn’t like the word “junkie” and that they shouldn’t be calling her names, they should be helping her. And those are Carla’s friends talking!

I was curious, as were many others, as to how many times Carla Dearest used the word “junkie” in the episode, but I already watched it twice and couldn’t go through it again for an accurate count. I got a volunteer from my Twitter audience, @TWEETPOLICE, to watch the show and do a count for me. In 40 minutes, it is reported that Carla used the word “junkie” 13 times, which is an average of once every three minutes! We don’t have any clue how many times she said it and it was edited it out or re-shot. And she even threw in the words “junk box” two times, and “pill popper” three times. Talk about kicking someone when they are down! This happened all before Renee went to rehab, so she was probably at her lowest point of her addiction. Way to go Carla!

I’m not too surprised at anything Carla says or does because she is generally so conceited and full of herself. It’s all about her, and as long as she isn’t hurting anyone, that’s fine. But, I have to say, even I was surprised at her personal attack on Renee. If she had said the word “junkie” once or even twice, in anger, I would still think it was wrong because addiction is a disease, but it would have only served to point out her own ignorance. However, thirteen times is really overkill. If we, as viewers, were shocked and upset for Renee, I can only imagine how AJ, her mom and sisters were feeling watching the show.

Carla called Renee a “junkie” 13 times, that includes one from the preview. Now that you know the “score,” does it change your opinion of Carla? Please feel free to comment, we would like to know your thoughts.

When I think of the word junkie, I think of some filthy nodding out heroin guru on the lower east side during the 70's. I don't think of a woman who has been through as much physically, mentally and emotionally as Renee has been. Her addiction is physiological, a result of her brain chemistry being changed by the stressors in her life. This is not a woman that should be broken down even further, but held up by the people around her who are supposedly her friends. Carla should remember the phrase "Those who are less broken have to take care of those who are more broken" Everyone has luggage, its not about what is in the bag, it's how you carry it. Carla owes Renee a huge apology, but I don't think Renee is holding her breath.

I was dumbfounded after hearing this Carla chick say such a thing about & to Renee on camera. How dare she...Renee is hardly a "junkie", she's a fellow woman, a mother, a daughter & someone who is/was supposed to be a friend; her sister put her on for God's sake & opened the door to a world of opportunity & nice income for her, her children & family to enjoy. This is how she shows respect & gratitude?! Perhaps Carla's parents/family never taught her such things; perhaps she's never heard the saying "don't bite the hand that feeds you". Whatever the case, I hope she's heard the saying "you know you done fucked up right?"...cause she has...big time. Karma & Payback are way bigger BITCHES than she is.

The fact that Carla continued to call Renee a junkie even after Renee said she was addicted shows how ignorant Carla is.I'm very happy that Renee kept it together enough and didn't slap Carla in the face. If it came down to a physical fight Carla would have to hide behind Drita.

Thanks for commenting. You are all on the money as far as I am concerned. Her fans should be calling her out on this instead of condoning it and defending her. It's really a sad commentary on society.

The day that people stop thinking or implying that addiction is a choice, is the day that addicts will begin to feel like they actually may have a choice. Addiction is like dancing with a Gorilla, you don't stop until the Gorilla lets you. Most addicts and their families wouldn't wish this on their worst enemy, let alone choose it for themselves or a loved one. No one chooses to F up their life, and loose everything they have and hurt their loved ones. And the fact that Carla seems to not realize this or care about what her words might do proves her ignorance and lack of compassion. Unlike Renee's allegations towards Carla, Renee has no choice in being an addict. And if Carla was ever a true friend that word would have never rolled off her tongue, much less so easily she might have well been saying her name. It was offensive and wrong.

Unfortunately it happened out of anger, some people do not know how to talk about addiction properly. But on the other hand Renee was so nasty mean to others too many times Carla finally snapped back at her but they'll over come it at least Carla got her to come clean about it to all the ladies and made Renee see she hit bottom herself and needed professional help. My heart goes to Renee for being a stand up mother and loyal to taking care of her sobriety!!

Ok so maybe it wasn't very nice of Carla to use the word junkie, but can we stop throwing the pity party for Renee? I mean, we all know Renee is an attention seeking drama mama and this whole addiction/rehab thing was just the ticket to put Renee right in the limelight. While I do feel for Renee and all she's been through, this topic is getting really old. Had Carla replaced "junkie" with "addict" those 13 times people still would have been up in arms. Obviously Carla was mad about Renee going around talking shit and saying she was a whore and that she's like the Lincoln tunnel and all of these things, so Carla aimed below the belt. Why is it ok for Renee to call her a whore and all of the things she said and for her small children to possibly see/hear about that but everyone wants to coddle Renee and her adult son because someone used a harsh word for what Renee really is...an addict. I admire Renee for her strength to get help, but I'm soooo over her drama mama stuff and her holier than thou attitude, as if she never called anyone (including her "friends") something that was a low blow. At this point it's like cry me a Fuckin river already. Just saying.

Hi, I have never commented on this blog before but I am a frequent reader. I have interviewed Carla for my own blog in the past and I really liked her. I thought she was a bit underdeveloped as a personality on the show and that is why I wanted to interview her.

I have watched every episode of MW since the show started and I really wanted to see how Carla's role would shake out. After seeing the first episode of season 3, I am disappointed in what I saw from her. I don't have an opinion on who she may or may not have slept with. I am with Big Ang on this...all of that I nobody's business and I don't think it needs to be brought up. BUT, I detest the derogatory way she spoke of people with drug addiction and the disgusting way she differentiates between who is a "junkie" and who is not. I hoped she would show a bit more compassion while sitting at the table with Big Ang, knowing the situation with her son but it seems like she went in harder on the "junkie" label.

Someone once said "education is a weapon against ignorance" and though Carla may feel she was protecting herself against Renee's attacks on her, she really came across as uneducated, insensitive and a bully. Everyone can change and I hope Carla has redemption by season end.

Chiara Soprano said...

Leslie that was a great assessment of the episode. We will have to see what happens the rest of the season, but I am sure Carla's ties with Renee are permanently severed.

I agree. The "friendship" is done and honestly, they are both better for it. I adore Renee and wish her the best in her recovery. What she is sharing with the world is hard to swallow, for some.

As for Carla, I am sure she would say she is not here for our approval but she is on a hit reality tv show and I think she lost some respect with some viewers. Being callous is not positive or a strength.

Chiara Soprano said...

Renee has had to deal with several extremely hard and personal issues that we know of just since the show started. A little compassion, instead of an attack, would have gone a long way.

I have so many thoughts on this. I honestly feel like that fight was low down and dirty on BOTH sides. They BOTH went in for the kill. I think it is wrong for the kids to be brought into it at all. Both of these women are mothers whose children will have to hear their mother speaking nasty of someone and being spoken nastily about by someone. I get that they are on tv but still. And both women's families have to deal with all this being played out on tv. It's sad, it's disgusting and it was uncomfortable to watch. I am in NO WAY defending Carla. Using the word junkie obviously was meant to hurt Renee and it did, but it also hurt her entire family and her friends. It hurt anyone who is suffering. Was suffering or is a loved one suffering from addiction, including her friend, Ang who is dealing with it with her son. It was awful to repeat it in Ang's house AFTER she told her it bothered her. I understand going back and forth, but to use someone's illness against them is the lowest blow. Carla had every right to defend herself, but I can't respect the way she chose to do it. I also don't agree with sleeping with a married man. That has hurt a lot of women and children. She did it, she was wrong but at least own your mistakes and apologize. Stop denying what is already public knowledge. By denying it its like slapping the wife (wives) in the face. It's hard to respect or feel for someone who doesn't seem to mind hurting others. St the same time, I adore Renee. She is an amazing woman who's been thru so much just in the past year alone, but with that I have to question if continuing to film a reality show while dealing with addiction and everything else going on was the healthiest choice for her. She has not given herself time to heal physically, emotionally or mentally. I get that it's a reality show and this is part of it but maybe she should have just done cameos for season 3. I would have missed her, but in the end I want her to be the healthiest happiest she can be so she can come back and shine even brighter. The one thing I can't stand about any of these women is the fact that they have all this knowledge of "secrets" with each other but as long as your friends they keep quiet. The minute they are mad they let all the skeletons fly. I don't like that at all. Sorry this was so long.

They all have their flaws. Renee needs/needed help and cries a lot. Carla lashes out when cornered or pissed off. Drita is a brawler. Ramona has a lot of bark but no bite as off yet. Big Ang can be pot-stirer at times. And Karen is a pitbull when bitten.
No my view doesn't change at all towards Carla. I like her. I love them all but Ramona. Idk... there is just something about her that doesn't sit well with me. When I figure it out, I'll let you know.
But for now, tho the name calling should be toned down, I still like Carla.

After watching this epo several times...the scene with Carla at Ang's house w/Renee & Drita just gets worse. Being at Ang's house & still using the junkie word knowing of Ang's sons situation not to mention what Renee is going through...sooo disrespectful..and then when Carla left she was soo pleased with herself...what!..does she have a brain at all?! SCUMBAG!!

I've now seen the episode twice now, I was able to watch from the uk on some website I won't name incase I can't watch it ;) the episode has opened my eyes upto even more.... And I'll tell what.... As an addict, renee is showing classic addict behaviour and has been through season 2. And 1! She is obsessioning over Carla's behaviour and although what Carla called her wasn't pleasant neither was what renee said and by the looks of it wasn't it renee whom started it, as carla said to drita on the board walk that yet again renee had a problem again with her. I think the word junkie is more offensive to friends and loved ones than it is to the actual person who it is being said about. Call me a junkie and that's exactly what I was.... I am now a recovering addict. Carla actually said big angs son wasn't as he was getting help... When this was shot renee hadn't entered a treatment program as far as we know.... That's to be aired later. To be honest... I think most on this blog would of called carla phoney or something else if she had driven renee to rehab and actually helped her. You just don't like the girl. Which is fine, we all have out favourites. I can not wait to see next weeks episode and of course I'm going to jump on here early Monday morning in the uk to see what's happened before I watch!! Have a great weekend mob wives lovers. P.s I hope I haven't offended anyone especially the people who write this blog

I have been watching, faithfully since day one, and I love all the girls, even with their flaws (and they each have a few). But I am tired of the pre-adolescent "everyone should be scared of me" baloney. Not only is it getting silly, considering they are all well over 35, but some of these women are NOT in fighting shape and would have a stroke if they really went toe to toe with someone for over 60 seconds. Drita would make it and maybe Carla because she works out alot, but not so much the other girls.

I think Renee and Carla both called each other names that were out of line (ho, junk-box) and it needs to stop. I was a fan of Carla's before because she didn't do the "I can beat everyone up" trash talk like Karen, Ramona... but now that she keeps throwing around the junkie word, she's losing respect from the viewers. Once Renee admitted a problem, she should have dropped it.

I'm sorry but I totally disagree with you. Unless someone holds you down and sticks a needle in your arm, u do have a choice. People CHOSE to take drugs, they know what the deal is, they know you get addicted, they know they will destroy their lives, but they still chose to pop the pill or snort or inject.
I have been through a major tragedy in my life, I have been at the lowest of the low, I never chose to take drugs as I know the consequences. Please don't make it easy for junkies by saying it is not their fault. It is, 100%.

Chiara Soprano said...

Peter we do not get offended because people disagree with what we say. Everyone is entitle to his or her opinion and as long as it is done respectfully, we appreciate other points of view.

Miami Girl, I agree with the fact that her overuse of the word would cause people to lose some respect for her. Thanks for commenting :)

KathyC thanks for your comments, you make some great points and it all makes good sense to me.

When people pick up a spoon, pipe or decide to snort, it is a choice.

When people have an illness and must take medication to control or cure the symptoms, it is not a choice.

Thanks for all the interesting opinions.

YAY!! MW is back and so are the recaps, 2 cents and comments on my favorite blog!

Happy New Year to all...

I was in shock to see the first episode of Season 3. Carla is some piece of work. The very first time any viewers had heard of Carla's questionable past (which I agree no one really cares about) is in the reunion of Season 2 when Karen mentioned something about it and if I recall correctly Renee even tried to shush her so that it wouldn't get out. Everyone for some reason or another really protected Carla's past by not mentioning it even if they despised her...

FAST FORWARD TO SEASON 3...

and you see that Carla could care to hit Renee below the belt. Renee probably had had enough of Carla's disrespectful "junkie" comments around town and decided if this is how she wants to play, then lets play. Renee would have never exposed her past, we know this - she had never done it before even with the problems she had with her- she knew this would be too much, but not Carla...

Carla, while always seemed cold and insensitive, seemed sensible while Drita was a hitting below-the-belt-talk-out-of-my-ass-moron.. I think Carla and Drita did the ole switcharoo like Freaky Friday.. LOL!!

Can't wait for Ep 2.

Ps. Love is great.. can't wait to see what she brings this season!!

I also loved how Carla was like, I have friends who like to party but don't take it too far. Lol So in Carla's book, as a mom, she's pro-recreational drug use but has contempt for people with serious problems. Great. As far as Renee being mean, Carla has been horrible to her over and over, yet Renee still always takes Carla's side and defends her over her true loyal friends, so Carla needs to grow up and stop playing victim to excuse her ugly behavior.

Anonymous said...

The only way Drita could go toe -to-toe for two seconds would be if she cried so hard when she got hit they drowned or if they got knocked over by the wind generated by her windmilling flailing arms. She already proved being in shape can't make you a fighter instead of a joke. Sorry if something similar posts, I didn't think it went through.

I think people are over Carla's shit because she has shown through the 3 seasons that she has not a whole lot of compassion and friendship to offer. With Renee's surgery, the Jr. fiasco, even with Drita's divorce, it seems like she doesn't give a shit about anyone but herself. Then she wonders why everyone doesn't like her.

Renee may be a drama queen at times but if shit hits the fan, she is there. She even turned around with Karen to support her. So I think people are more siding with Renee because she's shown heart, something Carla hasn't.

Anonymous said...

the problem I have with "Renee started it" is these women aren't in grade school. Renee got tired of Carla screwing her friends' husbands and called her some names, big deal. Carla, out of pure vindictiveness, outed Renee's serious personal problems and created a stigma against people who need help. It' s like shooting someone who throws a nerf rock and then trying to tell the cops "They started it." Love doesn't even know Renee but she acted like an adult with compassion for what Renee' s going through instead of retaliating with petty bullshit. The ice queen is supposed to be Renee'$ friend.

The way I see this is, hurt people hurt other people. I dont know much of Carla's back ground but it sounds like she is a habitual home wrecker. The question is, why does she feel second best? What secure and confident woman grows up to be a mistress? Exactly! Its nothing to be proud of and its certainly not something you want to admit. Now Big Ang says its nobody's business and Drita has her lips sealed but I kinda have to side with Renee on this one. I would not want this type of woman in my circle. #1 I wouldn't trust her around my man and #2 I like being happy. Renee called her out and Carla's rage took the best of her. I find that if something is not true you normally dont get belligerent about it. Carla deliberately wanted Renee to hurt. No different than cutting someone and watching them bleed. I think Carla got some weird joy out of hurting her in that way. There was no remorse or emotion. It was very sociopath like. I wouldnt trust her. And btw people are prescribed anti anxiety medication and sleep aid which can lead to dependency. I was in a car accident and the trauma of it led to my insomnia. It was really hard to get off the sleep medication. Its different for everyone and for different situations.

As a person finishing up a Psychology Degree to become an Addiction Counselor I have to, respectfully, disagree. There are situations where drug "users" have a choice..that I agree upon. Addicts on the other hand have an illness. (Something that can never be cured and can only be managed through strength and support.) If I have watched and understand correctly ..Renee began using medication as prescribed by her doctors after surgery. This was not a choice! Building a tolerance and thinking that "just one more will be okay" is not a choice. Once your brain is introduced to these chemicals changes start to happen psychologically that can lead into addiction. Especially after stress factors come into play. Once the disease takes hold the person is no longer in any type of control. This May be a bad example, keep in mind I have a personal connection to the next statement, but someone has the choice to start smoking..at some point the choice becomes less and less theirs..but once the disease of cancer sets in..there is absolutely no choice. Point being, yes.. you can choose to never touch a drug, but you can not choose to not be an addict. Addicts do need held accountable..but not crucified!

No offense, but Drita trash talks more than anybody, but when she fights she usually ends up crying and then making up some cock and bull story where she hurt Ramona so bad she was this close to dying. lol Ramona doesn't look out of shape, but even if she weighed 300 lbs she might have the advantage over Drita "Rocky in her mind" Davanzo based on what we've seen. ;)

After some recovery time a true recovering addict will be grateful to have been called a junkie and will make ammends with person who said it.....

Carla is ignorant. Im surprised that her and Bigg Ang have become so visibly close. I wonder if Bigg Ang is really what we saw in her first season MobWives? Her sister and Carla make me turn away from being a fan of Bigg Ang while Carla has done that since season 1. I saw the shady sneak she was, all the while being an instigator. Carla is in no place to degrade any other women on this show, or anyone in general. She is one of the biggest shit stirrers I have ever seen. And a huge hypocrite! She accused Joe of being a cheater but I firmly believe she was always one herself. I think it benefitted her to say that for the show and while he was in jail. She seemed to really think they would get back together, LOL, until he announced her had a young, pretty girlfriend. And Carla's " handyman" boyfriend is gross and I think he has a very shady background also.

Thank you for all the very interesting comments, thoughts and observations. This was great feedback and I see most of us here, if not all, are on the same page on this issue.

I'm pretty certain that Renee's addiction was to prescription products and I do remember a scene from a previous season where she showed all of her medications/mood stabilizers.

There are rumors that this is Carla's last season because of a tell-all book that will expose her so perhaps so honestly doesn't care anymore how her character is depicted on the show.

And, as someone who has seen Drita fight back in the day with my own eyes--she could even take down guys.

If you are all adults ,wouldn't it be wise to think before saying something that's hurtful that was one of your friends.Even though everyone says things when they are upset but it doesn't make it ok to disrespect anyone on television. You are also making a fool of yourself by putting someone small and making yourself better than anyone, that's not how it really is...You just made yourself more smaller by insulting others.I love the show but I love the fact how everyone was getting along. And for Carla,I do hope you learn from the mistakes you made by calling Rene a junkie....Rene is far from junkie to me...Junkie is not a form of a word to be use towards your friends or family...
