I Married A Mobster: Lorraine Arias-Beliveau, Love’s Mother

Originally posted 11 August 2011.

I often blog about the family and friends of the mob wives and mistresses that we watch each week. It’s not only interesting reading, but it gives us a fuller and deeper understanding of the women and their lives. Instead of the one dimensional picture we are given about their life in the mob, it’s insightful to have some additional information into who they are and where they came from. And, although we haven’t seen Love Majewski’s episode of I Married A Mobster yet, I came across a very interesting article in the Daily News, written by her mother, Lorraine Arias-Beliveau, that tells one amazing story.  It's the story of the love of a sister for her brother, who was a hero.

Lorraine describes how her youngest brother, Adam Arias, was a hero who saved lives the day the second World Trade Center building was struck in the 9/11 attack. His office was on the 84th floor. Lorraine says that another of their brothers, Major Donald Arias, in the US Air Force, had called to warn him about the attack and told him to get out of the building immediately. Adam was concerned for the safety of others and gave no thought to hmself.  He raced through the office making sure all employees left the building. Many have said that he saved their lives that day. Adam was last seen outside the towers helping firefighters get people to safety. In his valiant efforts to save others, he stayed moments too long at the site. The towers collapsed, he was killed and his remains were discovered 8 days later.

Lorraine tells of her own personal experience, in the Daily News, of how she sought justice for her brother, Adam, who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack while trying to save lives. In January, 2009 she went to Guantanamo Bay, where terrorist trials were being held. She went there with her brothers. Very few victims’ families were allowed to go, and those that did, were picked by a lottery system. She describes what she witnessed when she got there. There was a courtroom and five “detainees,” the co-conspirators of 9/11, were brought in. Among them, the alleged mastermind of the terrorist attacks on the United States, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. She recalls how his lawyer stopped the proceedings to asked the court for a pillow for the accused to sit on and how this sparked a lot of heated discussion. Lorraine was in disbelief as she thought, this man was responsible for the death of more than three thousand innocent people and they were talking about a cushion for him to sit on?  Mohammed proudly declared his guilt, but the trial was soon postponed by President Obama.

It's a story that should be told Love, especially with the anniversary of 911 coming up in a couple of weeks. Your uncle was a remarkable man and I am sorry to your family for your loss. It was a very sad day in our nation's history.

I have the honor of knowing Lorraine Arias and i would like to add that she travelled to GITMO on military transport and stayed in military accomadations so that she could experience what american soldiers stationed there live, she wanted no special treatment and what has not been mentioned in the lovely article above is that she has Multiple Schlorrosis and has limited mobility.Yet she still went to Gitmo,Now you all know where Love gets her tough exterior from! I love you Lorraine

question1-no i was never married to a mobster or ever even dated one.was i upset with my daughter? if you mean bad choices and a young girl led astray as all will be revealed on sept 7 episode the ans. is YES MANY TIMES OVER...her lifestyle was in direct oposition to mine. if your reference is to telling her story iwas taken aback as i live a very quiet life in a small town ,at the jersey shore with very conservative friends and neighbors-who did not grow up around this element..however ,this is LOVE'S STORY,and hers to tell if she chooses...you will see my struggles as a christian single mom,a mothers unconditional love a young girl caught up in web, and much ,much more...the story of 911 and my youngest brother is a differnt story of the pain this family still feels the loss..how we all banded together to search our brother out of the tragic ruins of what was once the world trade center..our trip to guantanamo bay,the trial the cessation of the trials endlessly seeking justice emploring the media for justice myself and bros lt col don arias, and andrew arias.I cannot explain what it feels like to be one of six children then one is gone.the charges were dropped against these men when the trials were going federal. here we sit going backwards-self admitted mass murderer KSM on the anniversary with no charges against him..the trials military tribunal set to resume with a weak economy and many who forgot though they swore they never would.my parents now in their 80's the country they pledged their allegiance to for all those yrs and no justice for their son...waiting...still...nothing..as the bloodshed of 3000 cries out from the very ground, families still mourning -no justice...

As a mother and a daughter I have to chime in. No disrespect is meant with my comment.

No mother wants to see the poor choices their children make. Any responsible mother tries to redirect or guide their children to make better decisions. However, as a mother I've refrained from judging my child(ren). Instead I've looked in the mirror and reflected on all the small or major errors I've made throughout my life even today. Doing this I understand that my children even when it pains me will make mistakes too. I'm living my life. I've taken my path. All I can do is hope that the values I've instilled in them will guide them to a happy & productive adult life. I know I can't shield them from everything and everyone. I hope if they choose the wrong path their mind & heart and my love will lead them eventually to the right one.

Did I make mistakes and bad choices as a young woman? Sure I did. However, I will never apologize for it. At the end of the day I was living my life as my mother has lived her's. I am her daughter not her reflection.

No one is perfect, not even mothers.
